This is not financial advice, and this is not an official military or government website.
This is general education. If you want official info, go to the **Thrift Savings Plan site.
If you’re in the military and not paying attention to your TSP, you’re leaving money on the table. Straight up.
Most people either ignore it… or just throw money in and hope it works out. That’s not a plan — that’s guessing.
This page isn’t here to overwhelm you. It’s here to give you a simple, no-nonsense starting point so you can stop guessing and start moving with purpose.
The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is your military retirement account.
Simple:
You put money in
The government matches part of it (free money if you joined after Jan 2018)
It gets invested and grows over time
If you’re not putting in at least 5%, you’re literally saying “nah, I don’t want free money.”
That’s crazy.
For some (*like me), this match doesn't apply because we're under a different system.
Let’s call it what it is:
“I’ll set it up later” → never happens
Money sits in the default fund forever
Market drops → they panic and stop contributing
Or they just don’t understand it and avoid it
Next thing you know… 8–10 years gone and nothing to show for it.
You don’t need to be a finance genius. Do this:
Put in at least 5% (get your match)
Use a Lifecycle (L) Fund based on when you plan to retire
Increase your percentage whenever you get paid more
That’s it. That alone puts you ahead of most people.
You can get fancy later. Right now? Build the habit.
Consistency.
Not guessing the market.
Not trying to be the smartest person in the room.
Just:
Keep contributing
Don’t stop when things dip
Let time do its job
Boring works. Flashy usually doesn’t.Consistency.
I teach this to my soldiers all the time, and it’s the same story:
The ones who win aren’t the smartest…
They’re the ones who stay consistent while everyone else quits.
You don’t need perfect.
You need discipline.
You say you want better opportunities?
Cool.
The same discipline it takes to build your TSP…
is the same discipline it takes to raise your ASVAB score.
Most people don’t have a knowledge problem.
They’ve got a consistency problem.
If you’re trying to raise your ASVAB score and actually qualify for better jobs, I offer structured training built to increase scores — not just “give you practice.”
Different options depending on how serious you are.
If you’re ready, reach out.
If not… no pressure. Just don’t stay stuck.
